Small daily expenses: what they are and how to cut them

The HeyCents team · · 1 min read

Small daily expenses are low-cost, frequent, almost automatic purchases that you barely feel because each one is so small. A coffee here, snacks there, one more delivery "just this once". None of them hurts; all of them together, at the end of the month, do.

Common examples

  • The mid-morning coffee, every day.
  • Delivery on a whim, with fees and tip included.
  • Soda, candy and snacks at the shop or the office.
  • Subscriptions you no longer use that keep charging each month.
  • Parking and short rides in taxis or ride-hailing apps.
  • Fees for using other banks' ATMs.

How to find them

You can't cut what you can't see. Log everything for two weeks, without judging yourself. Then sort the expenses from smallest to largest amount and count how often each repeats. The small things that repeat a lot are your list.

Five ways to cut them without suffering

  1. Pick one or two, not all. Cut first the one you enjoy least.
  2. Give them a weekly cap, for instance a fixed number of deliveries per month.
  3. Cancel the subscriptions you didn't use last month.
  4. Bring your coffee or lunch two or three days a week.
  5. Delay impulse buys for 24 hours: the urge often passes.

Tip: It isn't about removing the fun. It's about spending on what you truly enjoy rather than what you buy out of habit.

How HeyCents helps

In HeyCents, small daily expenses show up separately on the Home screen during the cycle, so you don't have to add them up by hand. And since logging is just saying a sentence, even the smallest expense gets recorded. The app also detects subscriptions and recurring payments without you logging them one by one, which helps you find the forgotten one.
