Log expenses by voice: the fastest way to keep track of your money
The HeyCents team · · 2 min read
The number one reason people quit tracking their spending isn't a lack of discipline: it's friction. Open the app, pick a category, type the amount, pick the date, save. If each expense takes half a minute, by week two you've stopped.
The problem: too many fields
A spreadsheet or a traditional app asks you to fill in several fields for every expense. That makes sense for bookkeeping, but it's absurd for a coffee. The friction builds up and logging becomes one more thing on your to-do list.
The alternative: say it like you'd say it to a person
Natural language logging means you type or say what happened, as is: "spent 30 on lunch", "paid rent yesterday", "got 200 from a side job". The app reads the sentence and fills in the amount, category and date for you.
- Faster: one sentence instead of five fields.
- More natural: you can talk while you walk or wait for the bus.
- More consistent: what's easy gets repeated.
How to get the most out of it
- Log as soon as you pay, not at the end of the day.
- Always include the amount and what you bought; the app works out the rest.
- You can put several expenses in one message.
- Review once a week and fix whatever needs fixing.
What HeyCents does
In HeyCents this is the main way to log. You speak or type the sentence and the app organizes the expense. The same assistant also answers questions about your finances ("how much have I spent on food this month?") and makes changes for you: it edits or deletes entries and creates debts, goals, budgets and reminders. Anything you delete stays in the trash for 30 days in case you change your mind.
Tip: A good log isn't the most detailed one: it's the one you actually keep every day.
