How to manage money as a couple without fighting about it
The HeyCents team · · 1 min read
Money is one of the biggest sources of tension in a relationship, rarely because of the amount, but because of missing agreements and clarity. These steps help sort it out.
1. Talk about money when you're not fighting
Schedule a calm conversation, not one in the middle of an argument about a purchase. Talk about income, debts, goals and each person's habits, without judging.
2. Decide how to split expenses
- Equally, if you earn about the same.
- In proportion to each person's income, if there is a big difference.
- A joint pot for shared costs and personal money for individual wants.
There's no single right formula: the best one is the one you both feel is fair.
3. Have goals in common
A trip, an emergency fund, a down payment. Giving a name and an amount to what you want to achieve together turns saving into a shared project instead of a restriction.
4. One place where both see the same information
Most money arguments start because each person has a different version of what was spent. If you both log in the same place, the conversation moves from "you spent" to "let's see how we're doing".
Tip: Once a week, ten minutes reviewing together how much you've spent. That's enough to avoid surprises.
